Hanging out with Young G-Z (aka Mr. Giraffe)
{At 6 months old (2 months corrected gestational age)}
It was really early in the morning. Around 4am. All I remember is the sound of footsteps and the bright lights that turned on in the room. Everyone seemed to be in panic. What was going on?
I was sleeping quietly in my crib one minute and the next thing I know, Lola is holding me in her arms. She has a gauze on my tummy. ???
Where's my g-tube?! That long tube thingy hanging from my tummy..was gone?!
Mommy called the pediatric surgeon. The on-call doctor was Dr. Gibbs. He advised mommy to take me to the ER within a few hours so that the g-tube site doesn't close up. Have them insert a new tube, Dr. Gibbs told mommy. Mommy actually asked if I still needed it. I was breastfeeding, bottlefeeding, and taking all my medication orally. I wasn't using my feeding tube at all. The doctor told mommy that it would be safer to get it replaced because once the hole closed up and I still needed the g-tube, I would have to be hospitalized and go through surgery again.
So off we went to St. Joseph's ER. Daddy drove and mommy stayed in the back with me. Hopefully this doesn't take long because daddy has to go to work. (Daddy was so cranky because he hadn't slept much...) We checked in, got taken back into a room, and waited and waited and waited. Nurses, doctors, and housekeeping people kept walking through the hallways, looked at us in the room, and kept on walking. Daddy was getting restless. And I was getting cranky because I was hungry. Mommy had occassionally reminded the nurses walking by that my g-tube needed to be replaced or it would close up. For some reason, they didn't have the necessary supplies. Mommy got frustrated and mad because they kept asking where I had my surgery...and I had it done at THAT hospital!!! Grrr! (Mommy has really bad ER experiences so I could tell that she wasn't too happy with the staff and their incompetence...)
